Sound collage in four Monitors
Sound Installation
December 2015, Des Moines Social Club
Throughout the 20th Century, the changes and improvements in recorded sound expanded its usefulness beyond art and entertainment. As studies were undergone to explore how recorded sound affected mood, it began to pervade nearly every aspect of life. What was once an artform for intentional listening, became a tool for affecting listeners whether they were actively listening to it or not.
"Sound Collage in Four Monitors" is an enveloping soundscape of department store music, radio ads, and television spots, presented to the audience in an environment designed for intentional listening. The installation explores the techniques used in sound that is produced to play on the subconscious, and invites listeners to consider what they really hear through the barrage of sounds that track our days.
